Turnkey smart home in Batumi: why a flat by the sea needs one

How the system works

The heart of the system is the hub. Sensors, relays and motors talk to it over the Zigbee protocol rather than through your home router, so battery-powered sensors use very little energy. Mains-powered devices, such as relays and sockets, also relay the signal, so the network reaches even the far bedroom. Some equipment, Tuya curtain motors for example, works directly over Wi-Fi and does not need a hub. The Matter standard lets you bring devices from different brands together in one app.

An important question: what happens if the internet goes down? The lights and the lock keep working, and the hub runs the scenes. Only notifications and remote control stop working.

Which ecosystem to choose

For iPhone owners the most convenient choice is Aqara together with Apple Home. With Android, Aqara, Xiaomi Mi Home or Tuya work well alongside Google Home. For voice control you can use Siri, Google Assistant or Alexa.

With or without renovation

In new buildings a smart home is usually installed without chasing the walls: relays hide in the back boxes behind ordinary switches, sensors run on batteries, and the smart lock takes the place of the developer's lock. If the renovation is still ahead of you, it is worth planning for five things:

1. A neutral wire in the switch back boxes.
2. A recess and a 220 V supply for an electric curtain track, including in a stretch ceiling.
3. A cable by the front door for a video doorbell or intercom.
4. Access to the boiler or underfloor heating terminals, so you can control the heating from your smartphone.
5. A cable to a Wi-Fi access point in the hallway: the monolithic concrete walls of high-rises noticeably weaken the router signal.
