FAQ
How much does regrouting and resealing cost?
Silicone from 12 ₾ per metre, around a basin from 30 ₾. Removing old grout and regrouting from 25 ₾/m², epoxy grout from 45 ₾/m². Labour prices; materials are on the estimate or yours. Call-out is 50 ₾, free for orders from 150 ₾.
Why does grout go black again?
Usually humidity: the bathroom fan is weak and water takes too long to dry. New grout with anti-fungal treatment lasts longer, but if the fan doesn't work we'll check it and tell you how to fix it.
Is black grout mould?
Most often yes: it's mould on the surface of grout and silicone, and renewing the joints removes it. If the spots spread to walls or the ceiling, the cause is deeper and needs a damp survey (see «Mould & Waterproofing»).
When can I shower again?
Cement grout and silicone need about 24 hours. Epoxy grout sets faster, but it's best to wait until the next day as well.
Is epoxy grout worth it?
For showers and bathroom floors, yes: it doesn't absorb water, barely darkens and is easy to clean. It costs more and takes longer to apply, so cement grout is usually fine for walls away from water.
Regrouting and resealing in Batumi: bathroom refresh without removing the tiles
The tiles in your bathroom may be intact and modern, but dark grout lines and yellowed silicone along the edge of the bath make them look old. By the sea this happens noticeably faster: after a shower the moisture lingers in the bathroom for hours, the grout never gets a chance to dry, and mould settles in the pores of the cement joint. You do not need to relay the tiles to fix this. Replacing the grout and silicone gives your bathroom a neat look again in a single visit from our tradesman.
When it is time to replace them
- The grout lines have turned black and will not come clean even with chlorine-based cleaners.
- The silicone has yellowed, become covered in spots or is coming away from the edge of the bath or shower tray.
- The grout is crumbling and washing out, especially in the shower floor.
- The flat is being prepared for short-term letting, and the bathroom has to look fresh in the photos.
Black grout lines almost always mean mould on the surface of the grout and silicone, and it goes when they do. If the stains have spread to the walls or ceiling, the problem runs deeper: you need a damp diagnosis and possibly waterproofing.
What we do
We cut out the old silicone and carefully rake out the joints without chipping the tile edges. We treat the joints with an anti-mould solution and let it dry, otherwise the new grout would seal the spores inside. Then we fill the joints and apply sanitary silicone with an anti-fungal additive along the junctions of the bath, shower tray, washbasin and kitchen worktop. Finally we tidy up and tell you how long to wait before using the shower.
Cement or epoxy grout
Moisture-resistant cement grout suits walls away from water and costs less: removing the old grout and applying new with anti-mould treatment costs from 25 ₾ per m². For the shower and the bathroom floor we recommend epoxy, from 45 ₾ per m². It does not absorb water, hardly darkens and wipes clean with an ordinary sponge. It takes longer to work with, which is why it costs more, but in an area that is constantly wet the difference pays for itself through years without black grout lines.
If the grout is still sound and has only darkened, an anti-mould treatment of the joints may be enough, from 8 ₾ per m².
Silicone prices
A new silicone seal in the shower or along the edge of a bath or tray costs from 12 ₾ per linear metre. Sealing a washbasin or worktop costs from 30 ₾ per item. Materials are paid for separately: the tradesman will bring them according to the quote, or you can buy them yourself. The call-out costs 50 ₾, and you do not pay it if the work comes to 150 ₾ or more.
When you can shower
Cement grout and silicone need about a day before the first shower. Epoxy sets faster, but it is still best to give it until the next day.
Why grout lines darken again and how to prevent it
The main cause of repeat blackening is poor extraction. If the mirror stays steamed up for a long time after a shower and the walls remain wet until evening, we will check the extractor fan and suggest what to change. A simple habit helps: after a shower, squeegee the water off the walls and leave the door ajar. In these conditions new grout with anti-mould treatment stays light for much longer.
If the bathroom is in a rental flat, it is convenient to refresh the joints between seasons, when the calendar has a couple of free days for drying.
